Working Network Marketing (MLM)

For a lot of people, Network Marketing or MLM (also known as Direct Selling) is a 4-letter word. Some people that are in the industry shy away from telling friends and family what we do because of the stigma that comes along with being a Network Marketer and it’s not even the industry’s fault. The fault lies with those who don’t market properly and those who create pryramids or Ponzi schemes and call it Network Marketing.

What people fail to realize is that Network Marketing is very legit and we do it without being in the business. When we eat at a restaurant we like. we tell our friends (or Facebook) about it. This prompts others to visit that restaurant and they may share their experience with their friends and so on and so forth. With Network Marketing, we just get paid to tell our friends about the “restaurants” and when they go and eat at them.

The difference between this model and the actual network marketing business opportunity is you actually get paid when your friends join you at the restaurant.

Does Network Marketing/MLM really work?

This is a question many people who are not in NM ask quite often. Even people who are in NM ask this if they can’t seem to get their business off the ground. The short answer? Yes! The longer answer? Yes, NM works for those who work it. Many people see NM as a get-rich-quick scheme and feel that as soon as they join their business opportunity millions of dollars will start pouring in and they will never have to work again for the rest of their lives.

While NM helps some people realize financial freedom and retire a lot earlier than their normal 9-5, it is not a “get-rich-quick” scheme. It takes hard work to make money in NM. You have to build a team and you can’t just build a team by sitting at home, thinking that just because you are in it “they will come.” You have to go out (either in person or online), talk to people, and actually show them the opportunity. Then, once you get others to invest in the opportunity for themselves, you have to train them to go out and do the same.

How do I get Network Marketing/MLM to work?

We have already discovered that NM works if you work it, but we will now dive into how to work it. Here are a few tips on how to do just that.

  1. Find the right company/business opportunity. It all starts with the business opportunity that is the right fit for you. To find the right opportunity, go through a list of NM firms at MLM Rankings, and research any and all companies you feel would be right for you. There some key elements to look at when determining which opportunity you are going to go with.
    • Age/longevity. How old is the company? Most businesses fail within the first 3 – 5 years. If the company you are looking at is older than 5 years old, chances are it may last.
    • Products and Services. Consider whether the company offers products and services that customers will actually use and continue to come back for.
    • Compensation plan. Look for comp plans that easy to understand and easy to attain with very little training, especially if you are new to NM. A good compensation plan rewards it’s distributors for their development over time.
    • Training, support, and proven system. Look at whether all of these are ongoing and are working. If the people at the top train their downline and show them the same system that they followed to get where they are, then you are off to a good start. This leads me to number 2.
  2. Follow the system and be coachable. If your company has a proven system that distributors follow to become successful, it is your job to follow it as well. It doesn’t matter what knowledge you have prior to coming into the opportunity, if the system works, go with the system. Listen to your upline and stay connected to them.
  3. Get to know your upline. This is connected to #2. Stay connected to you upline. Call them daily to tell them your progress, ask any questions that you may need answered to ensure your success. Let them know who you are and let them see that you are  serious about your success and the success of the organization. The more committed you are to the teams success, the more committed they will be to your success.
  4. Be a leader. Take everything you learn from your upline/mentor, implement it in your business, and train your downline to do the same. Don’t leave your team out there to fend for themselves. Much like you stay connected to your upline, likewise, stay connected to your downline. The more you help them to succeed, the more you you will succeed.
  5. Have fun!!! A lot of people lose site of the fact that while this is a business…their business…it should be something they enjoy. If you have fun doing a thing, your chances of continuing it and succeeding in it increase exponentially/

While this list is not all-inclusive, it is a good place to start when you are getting into Network Marketing. What things that aren’t on this list do you look for when getting into Network Marketing. Share in the comments section below.
